Mom Exhibit: Day 1

Can I just say I'm really, really terrified to publish this? I am afraid that you'll judge me. I'm scared that this project won't go over the way I intended.

With that said, here's why I'm divulging the mess in which I live.

There are so many internet sites with tips on how to be a better mom, housekeeper, organizer, crafter, cook, wife and friend. They're all directed at women. With all of this noise screaming in our faces how we can and should be better than we are, we are left feeling incompetent and guilty for not being able to keep up.

I want you moms to realize how well you're already doing. I want you to see that the majority of us moms to young kids have messy, cluttered homes. And that's OK. It's noooorrrmalll.

I don't keep the tidiest house because I choose not to clean all day. Rather, I feed the kids cereal and blueberries, dink around on the internet, read some books with them, throw a load of laundry in the wash when we've been wearing our last clean outfits for two days, talk on the phone with my sisters, you get the idea. My idea of a mom is not one who purely cooks and cleans all day. I've done that and it sucks.

So, here we go. I'm sacrificing my reputation in the hopes that maybe one mom will lower her expectations and feel like a success at the hardest job in the universe. Welcome to my behind-the-scenes. Here's us today:

Oh, and did I mention it's almost 2 pm? No shame. This is the life of a real mom. Maybe this is what "having it all together" looks like.

  1. Thanks for sharing what life is really like. My house is very similar, dishes always piled, last night's dinner pans stack up for days sometimes and only get washed when I need them next. I'm glad we have the piano teacher come to our house because it is a scheduled visit that I know I need to tidy the public spaces at least once a week. Otherwise, I've told myself I don't ever want to live like I'm trying to sell my house and have it ready to show on a daily basis. It is way too stressful and unrealistic. Living life means making messes.

  2. I'm actually thinking your house isn't so bad, nothing a load of dishes wouldn't fix lol I have piles too, piles I don't know what to do with, piles that sit for weeks if not months waiting on a storage box. It drives me mad but it's my doing lol
Thanks for sharing inside your home with us, I love peeking inside someone elses house to see how they live, and from what I see, you're doing a great job! Children first :)

  3. Ahh, this post makes me feel so much better! I clean what seems like non-stop just to have everything pulled out 2 seconds later. I only have a husband and near 8 month old. I feel doomed the rest of my life. Ha! Thanks for being real! :)

  7. Haha! Love it, my house looks ten times worse than this about 98% of the time! Hey, at least you cooked dinner the night before...we ate fast food!

Love the bedhead! I usually have that going on as well, until about 6:00 or 7pm when the hubby is on his way home..then I jump in the shower so I can at least say I accomplished that for the day! Thanks for being real, makes me feel better!

  9. I love this! I may show you all my house. 3 kids. 2 full time working parents. I clean almost every single day and my house is always messy. .5 seconds after I pick something up, Logan or Charlotte bring it right back out. Tis the life. My house is a live in house...not a show house...just like yours! Awesome post! And really your house is not bad. Ive seen worse. Ive had worse here.

  10. Becky - this is possibly my new favorite blog. I forgot how hilarious you are! At least you have a house to get messy... we're still living in my parent's basement (but we ARE house hunting at the moment). It's worse living here in terms of trying to keep up with cleaning the house - just imagine having your mother come down to see your daily messes. I'm one of those people that has some project going at all times, so there's always a pile of junk that only I understand somewhere at home. My kiddo is too small to make her own messes, but there's still toys everywhere. Oh well.

Love ya! I'm glad there's the internet so I can read all about your awesomeness.
